I came across something impressive the other day, and it got me thinking - if you did this with your customers, sites, and blogs… just imagine the kind of loyalty you’d build.
Here’s what impressed me…
I’d just installed the Criteo AutoRoll plug-in on my site - it’s the red thing on my sidebar that says, “More Blogs”. I decided to go on a little adventure, and check out a few of the sites - one of which happened to be Blogozine, because it was one of the blogs listed.
I started to read a post regarding this plug-in - after all, I wanted to see what someone else thought of it. (Yes, I was looking for social proof. I am, after all, 97% human. There’s also a lesson in customer behaviour there, too.)
I went to add a comment to the post, being the very sociable person that I am, and here’s what I saw at comment number 1 in the post:
Thanks for spreading the word about AutoRoll to your readers, Dee!

I admit, I was amazed. Criteo get it. They have an evangelist! In the world of internet influence magic, Criteo are the Penn and Tellers. By supporting their client’s use of their product, they are reassuring them that they made the right decision - and are moving towards converting their clients into evangelists themselves.
Magic! Hats off to Criteo. For their marketing efforts, their free widget deserves one more plug.
Criteo are spreading their word… how are you spreading yours?

1Absolutely essential insight - I make my staff sign our emails with some form of gratitude… and of course I request that they mean it, of course you can’t force the actual feeling of gratitude. I’m confident that they do find something to be grateful for in each interaction, and if nothing else, the inistence is a reminder. I pretty much *am* the evangelist, so there’s that.
But the simple act of thanking can show how supportive you are, because most people, don’t say it. Even when they think it. I’m enjoying your blog - thank you for all your thoughts expressed.

2First of all thanks for the mention Paul. Although I have really appreciated Criteo stopping by and thanking me for the post, it didn’t exactly happen magically. What happened was that their project manager emailed me asking me to give AutoRoll a try, I liked it and decided to write about it and emailed him back with a link to my post. So I guess they kinda turned me into an evangelist.
If I’d give full credit for a company for their marketing efforts it’s Spock.com and MyBlogLog.com … as they have found my posts on their own and took the time to answer my questions.

3@Tinu - that’s a great idea. Your staff have always got something to be grateful for, because it’s your customers that keep your staff in jobs
Thanks for the comment.
@Dee - well, it’s still impressive that they asked you to give it a try, and then supported your decision. I’ve heard of MyBlogLog but not so familiar with Spock.com, so I’ll have to take a look. Thanks for your comment!

4Thanks for the kind words, Paul! It’s very important for us to keep track of what people are saying about AutoRoll, and we make a concerted effort to discover and respond to these discussions so that our users understand that we appreciate what they have to say about the product.
@Dee - I actually found your post on Technorati before I knew that our Product Manager had contacted you, but either way, we’re glad to have you as a user!
